eSIM activation QR code
The activation QR code is the standard way to install an eSIM: scanning it triggers the download of the profile into the phone. It does not contain the plan itself, but two pieces of information: the provider's server address (SM-DP+) and a single-use activation code. Once the profile is downloaded, the QR has done its job: rescanning it reinstalls nothing.
Why it matters when travelling
The golden rule: scan the QR calmly, on wifi, BEFORE departure. The worst moment to discover a temperamental QR is the baggage carousel. And since the code is single-use, never test it “just to see” on a device other than the one you are travelling with: the profile would install in the wrong place.
The QR shows on the screen of the very phone meant to scan it? Three ways out: open it on another screen (laptop, tablet), use direct install from the provider's app (recent iPhones can also install from a saved photo of the QR), or switch to manual entry with the supplied SM-DP+ address and code.
The misconception
“I lost my QR code, my plan is gone.”
If the profile is already installed, the QR is of no further use: everything lives in the phone. If the profile was not yet installed, the provider can resend the same QR (as long as its code has not been consumed) or issue a new one: an email to support with the order reference is enough.
In practice, device by device
On iPhone
- Settings, Mobile Data, Add eSIM, Use QR code: the camera opens, aim at the code.
- Since iOS 17 you can also install from a screenshot of the QR: long press the image, then Add eSIM.
- Follow the screens: line label, default line, mobile data.
On Android
- Settings, Network & internet (or Connections), SIM, Add eSIM, then scan the code.
- If the camera will not focus, raise the brightness of the screen showing the QR and move the phone back a little.
- After repeated failures, switch to manual entry: same result, no camera.
What it changes when you compare
Every provider delivers a QR, but not with the same quality of support: QR sent by email AND available in the app, manual codes shown alongside, per-device instructions. That redundancy counts the day the email goes missing: it is an experience criterion in the esimrat comparisons.
Compare eSIM plans by destinationThe rat's tip: Screenshot the QR AND the manual codes as soon as they arrive, filed in a “Travel” album available offline. It is the zero-euro insurance against 90% of the install trouble told in customer reviews.

Frequently asked questions
Can an eSIM QR code be reused?
No: its activation code is single-use. Once the profile is downloaded onto a device, the same QR cannot install the profile elsewhere. To change device you need a reissue from the provider.
Does an eSIM QR code expire?
The QR itself does not expire, but the attached plan may have an activation deadline (30 to 90 days after purchase at some providers). If you buy far ahead, check that deadline in the offer's terms.
Why does my phone refuse to scan the QR code?
In order of likelihood: QR shown too small or too dark (enlarge it, raise brightness), code already consumed (contact support), phone not eSIM compatible or carrier-locked. Manual entry works around the first two; nothing works around the last two.
