VoLTE (Voice over LTE)

On the road

VoLTE (Voice over LTE) carries voice calls over the 4G network, instead of the old 2G and 3G networks historically used for voice. In practice: calls connect faster, audio quality is better (HD), and above all you stay on 4G/5G during a call instead of dropping back to 3G.

Why it matters when travelling

More and more countries are switching off their 2G and 3G networks to reassign the spectrum to 4G and 5G. In those countries, a phone or a plan without VoLTE simply cannot make or receive ordinary calls: only data remains. Europe is on the same path, with a gradual shutdown of 2G and then 3G over the coming years.

For a traveller on a data-only eSIM, VoLTE changes nothing about data use (WhatsApp, video calls). It concerns your main line: check that VoLTE is switched on there, and that your carrier's “4G calling” option is active, before heading to a country with no 2G/3G.

The misconception

“VoLTE is a comfort option, you can do without it.”

That was true ten years ago. In a country that has switched off 2G and 3G, VoLTE is the ONLY way to make an ordinary mobile call. Without it, the phone shows signal but calls fail or quietly go nowhere.

What it changes when you compare

On a data-only eSIM the question does not arise: no ordinary calls anyway. On the rare travel eSIMs including voice, check that VoLTE is supported in the destination country: that is what decides whether calls will go through on a modern network.

The rat's tip: Before leaving for Japan, Singapore, Australia or the United States (countries with little or no 2G/3G), spend 30 seconds in the settings: Mobile Data, Options, Voice & Data, and check that VoLTE or “4G” is on for your main line. It saves the nasty surprise of the first call.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether my phone supports VoLTE?

Every eSIM-capable smartphone supports it in hardware. What matters is activation: on the phone (Voice & Data settings) and at the carrier (4G calling option, included at most carriers). If in doubt, your carrier's customer area says so.

Does VoLTE use my mobile data?

No. VoLTE calls travel over a dedicated voice channel of the 4G network: they are counted as ordinary calls by your plan, not as data. That is different from WhatsApp or FaceTime calls, which do consume data.

What is the difference between VoLTE and VoWiFi?

Same principle, different network: VoLTE carries the call over 4G, VoWiFi (Wi-Fi calling) over a wifi connection. Abroad, VoWiFi keeps you reachable on your number with no home mobile network, from the hotel wifi.
