Free eSIM: what is actually free, and what is not (2026)
Yes, eSIMs with real free data do exist. No, they do not replace a data plan. We are usually talking about 100 MB to 1 GB, subject to certain conditions, and it's very useful for what it's intended for.
The trouble with this search is that three completely different things get called a free eSIM: the eSIM profile given away while the data stays paid, the SIM fee waived by a carrier while the plan stays paid, and genuinely free data in small amounts. All three land in the same search results, and that is what wastes your time.
In this 2026 guide, we untangle the three, list the six offers that actually provide free data (Nomad, GoMoWorld, GigSky, iRoamly, Firsty, Maya Mobile) along with their data volumes and conditions as of September 15, 2026, highlight the almost free trial from Yesim and the post-purchase bonuses from Voye and Holafly, provide the actual cost of eSIM fees with French operators, and answer the real question: what is the use of a free eSIM, and at what point does paying 80 cents become smarter than looking for something free.

« Free eSIM » means three different things
This is the source of the confusion, and until it is cleared up no answer holds. Three very different offers hide behind the same word.
1. The eSIM profile is free, the data is paid. This is by far the most common case. Downloading the profile costs nothing, but it is useless until a plan is bought on it. It is free in the sense that an empty SIM card would be free.
2. The eSIM fee is waived, the plan stays paid. That is what happens at French carriers when they drop the €10 setup fee in certain situations. The line itself is still billed every month.
3. Data is actually offered. Here, we are talking about true free: usually between 100 MB and 1 GB, without paying anything. This is the only category that truly answers the question, and it is the rarest.
The rat's advice: when a page advertises a free eSIM, look immediately for the data volume. If there is no figure in megabytes or gigabytes, it is case 1 or case 2, and you will be paying.
The eSIMs that really do give free data
Here are the offers recorded on September 15, 2026, from the providers' own websites, categorized into three levels: truly free data, almost free, and free only after a purchase. Volumes and conditions are those displayed on the day of recording.
Nomad: 1 GB free, no credit card required. Valid in 76 destinations, installable up to 15 days before departure, with 24 hours of usage once the eSIM is activated on-site. Reserved for new customers, via the app only, and the provider warns that once a trial is used, access to other welcome promotions is closed. This is the most generous volume of all permanent trials, tied with GoMoWorld: paid plans can be found on our Nomad page.
GoMoWorld: 1 GB free trial on selected destinations. The offer is activated via the app, with no commitment, and is used to test the network before paying for a plan, which starts from €3.99 with them. The list of eligible destinations is displayed in the app when choosing the country. Plan details can be found on our GoMoWorld info sheet.
GigSky: 100 MB free for 7 days in 125 countries, and 500 MB for Europe. The standard trial provides 100 MB, the free Europe eSIM increases to 500 MB across 42 European countries, and a cruise eSIM offers 100 MB on over 290 vessels. No credit card is required, everything is handled through the app, and the same eSIM is then used for the plans purchased within it.
iRoamly: 500 MB free for 1 day in over 100 destinations. Reserved for new customers, one trial per person, no credit card required. The catch is a small detour: you must share the offer from the app to receive the code to enter before installing the eSIM. Hotspotting is allowed.
Firsty: permanent free data, in exchange for advertising. The model is different: you watch a short advertisement to unlock data, in France and in 170 countries, at base speed. No registration, no bank verification, no commitment. The provider presents it as usable for email, messaging, and transport apps, which accurately describes the level of service.
Maya Mobile: 15 GB for 7 days in over 50 countries, on an event page. The provider put this free eSIM online for the Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona, and the page was still live on September 15, 2026: a QR code to scan from a compatible device, with no other formalities shown. An event offer can disappear overnight, but as long as it is online, it is by far the largest free volume on the market.
Offers retrieved on September 15, 2026, from the websites of Nomad, GoMoWorld, GigSky, iRoamly, Firsty and Maya Mobile. A free trial may be modified or withdrawn without notice: check the displayed volume before relying on it.
Almost free: Yesim, 500 MB for €0.50. It's not a gift, it's a trial priced like a piece of gum: 500 MB valid for 1 day, in over 50 countries, reserved for new customers, once per account, from the website or the app. At this price, it does the same job as a free trial, without the detour of sharing or advertising. The brand's discount code is on our Yesim promo code page.
Free only after a purchase, first case: Voye Global. A 100 MB trial is added to every purchased plan, usable from home to verify that the eSIM works before departure. Practical, but it isn't free; it's a bonus. Details can be found on our Voye Global info sheet.
Second case: Holafly and its "Always On". 1 GB per month offered as long as the eSIM remains installed, in 200 destinations, but only after the purchase of an initial plan. This is a loyalty incentive, not a free trial. The brand's unlimited plans are compared on our Holafly fact sheet.
No free trial displayed: Saily and Airalo. Saily offers no trial, only a referral program that earns rewards. Airalo does not display any free eSIMs on its plan pages when viewed from France. With both of them, the only way to pay less is through a discount code when one is available.
Free profile, paid data: the most common case
This is the category that causes the most misunderstanding, because providers use the word « free » in complete honesty, but for something else.
Ubigi is the textbook example. The provider explains how to get a free eSIM profile depending on the device: on iPhone and iPad by installing their app, on Android by filling in a form that returns a QR code by email, on a compatible laptop by opening the Mobile Plans app. The profile costs nothing. The data is bought afterwards.
The logic is the same at nearly every travel eSIM provider: the profile is the container, not the contents. That is good news in itself, because it means installing a travel eSIM costs nothing until you buy, unlike a carrier SIM card.
The rat's advice: take advantage of that kind of free anyway. Install the profile before you leave, while you are on Wi-Fi and unhurried, and only buy the plan when you actually need it. You avoid wrestling with an eSIM install on arrival, with no network and no connection.
eSIM fees at French carriers
Third case: your main line. Here, « free eSIM » means the carrier is not charging the setup fee, which is far from the rule.
At Free it is €10, at order time, identical for a plastic card and for an eSIM, on every plan. We went through the full procedure in our guide on ordering a Free Mobile eSIM.
At RED by SFR it is €10 too, including to convert a physical card into an eSIM. The detail sits in our article on the RED by SFR eSIM.
At Sosh it depends on the situation, and it is the only case where the word free genuinely applies: activation is waived when subscribing with a smartphone purchase, on Let's Go plans taken out online, and to move an existing eSIM to another handset. Otherwise it is €10. The case-by-case detail is in our breakdown of Sosh eSIM fees.
In other words, hunting for a « free eSIM » at your French carrier almost always means hunting for an exception. The normal market price is €10.
What a free eSIM is really for, and when paying becomes smarter
500 MB to 1 GB is little, but it is not nothing if you know what to spend it on. Those volumes cover a few precise uses properly.
What it covers well: picking up email and messages on landing, calling a taxi or a ride-hail, pulling up directions, sending word that you have arrived, confirming a booking. In other words, the first hour of a trip, the one where you are most stranded.
What it does not cover: continuous GPS navigation, video, tethering, or simply a week of normal use. A gigabyte goes in one to two days of ordinary use.
And that is where the real trade-off comes in. The first 1 GB plan from the comparator for Turkey starts at €0.80, valid for 7 days, as listed in the voilà eSIM catalog on September 14, 2026. For the price of a third of a coffee, you get the same data volume as the most generous free trial, with no new customer requirement, no 24-hour expiration, and no ads to watch.
Price taken from the comparator's supplier catalogs on September 14, 2026. Rates vary depending on the destination: compare yours on our destination pages.
On this report, voilà eSIM shows the lowest price for 1 GB for this destination, making it a solid value for money in this area. Furthermore, the brand focuses on an eSIM that is easy to install with a user-friendly app, and on human customer support available 24/7. Every provider has their own specialty, and the right choice depends on your destination and your data usage: compare them all on our eSIM operators page.
The rat's advice: the right method is to stack them. Install a free trial before you leave for the first hour on the ground, and buy the paid plan using the connection it gives you, once you have arrived and settled. You pay only for what you actually need, and you are never cut off.
