La Poste Mobile eSIM: not available yet, and here is when that changes (2026)

In this rundown, we cover the whole question: why La Poste's mobile brand still has no eSIM in 2026, what you get instead when subscribing (physical SIM card, activation, customer area), the launch date announced by its CEO, the context of the Bouygues Telecom takeover and the network switch, the French carriers that already offer eSIM (Orange, SFR, Bouygues, Free), the practical alternatives to enjoy a virtual SIM card without cancelling your plan, notably the travel eSIM in Dual SIM mode, and the list of compatible smartphones, from iPhone to Samsung Galaxy to Google Pixel.

La Poste Mobile eSIM: not available yet, and here is when that changes (2026)

Does La Poste offer eSIMs?

No. La Poste Mobile does not offer the virtual SIM card (eSIM) on its plans yet. Only traditional physical SIM cards are available when subscribing to a mobile offer with this carrier. In practice, whether you sign up online or in one of the 6,000 post offices, you receive a triple-cut SIM card (standard, micro, nano) by post, to insert into your phone.

That makes it a real exception in the French landscape: the postal carrier remains one of the last sizeable players running exclusively on the physical SIM card, while eSIM technology has become standard at the major carriers and on every recent smartphone.

A quick reminder for comparison: an eSIM is a chip soldered directly into the smartphone, onto which you download an eSIM profile in a few minutes, with a simple QR code or an app. No plastic card, no waiting for the post, no tray to open: activation is fast and the line works the same day you subscribe. That is the technology's number one advantage, along with the ability to store several profiles on one device. The classic SIM, by contrast, has to be shipped, inserted, then activated with a PIN code. We covered how the technology works in detail in our what is an eSIM article.

The lack of eSIM does not hurt the day-to-day use of a La Poste Mobile plan. It becomes a real blocker in three cases: you buy a phone sold as eSIM only like the iPhone Air, you want a second line on the same device (Dual SIM), or you travel abroad and want a local eSIM without touching your physical card.

How do you get a La Poste Mobile eSIM?

As of today, you cannot: no offer from the carrier provides an eSIM, neither when subscribing to a new plan nor as a replacement for an existing SIM card from the customer area. If your card is lost or broken, La Poste Mobile sends out a physical SIM card, not a digital profile.

The good news is that the arrival date is known: La Poste Mobile's CEO has announced an eSIM launch for September 2026, in comments reported by the specialist press. The trigger: the iPhone Air, the first iPhone sold worldwide without a SIM tray, which is simply unusable with a 100% physical-card carrier. A word of caution though: until the offer is live, this date remains an announcement, not a contractual commitment.

This launch is part of a bigger shift: the takeover of La Poste Mobile by Bouygues Telecom. The carrier is gradually moving from the SFR network to the Bouygues network: new customers already connect through Bouygues Telecom, and the migration of existing subscribers runs until 2027. Along the way, the carrier has announced included 5G and new calling features. The eSIM is the logical next step of that modernisation.

In the meantime, subscribing to a La Poste Mobile plan remains 100% physical: La Poste Mobile sells low-price, commitment-free plans, sometimes bundled with an internet box. You order online, where a few personal details are enough, or at a post office; the SIM card arrives within a few days and activation goes through the customer area. In our survey of 19 August 2026, the headline plan showed 200 GB at €11.99 per month with no commitment, including 30 GB usable in Europe and the French overseas territories.

eSIM status and plans checked on 19 August 2026 on the official La Poste Mobile website; September 2026 launch announced by the CEO, comments relayed by the specialist press.

Which carriers offer eSIM?

In France, all four major networks offer eSIM: Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free. With each of them, you can subscribe directly with an eSIM or convert your existing physical SIM card into an eSIM from the customer area, usually free of charge or for a few euros. Activation happens via QR code or through the carrier's app, in a few minutes.

Among virtual carriers (MVNOs), support improves year after year but remains uneven: La Poste Mobile is not the only budget brand still limited to the physical card. Before signing up with an MVNO for its price, always check eSIM availability on its website if that matters to you.

And there is another family of players, often forgotten in this question: travel eSIM providers, prepaid and commitment-free, such as Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Ubigi, Nomad, Yesim or voilà. They do not replace your home plan: they provide data abroad, destination by destination. To place the positioning, voilà pushes value for money with final displayed prices, an eSIM that is easy to install with an easy-to-use app, and human customer support 24/7; others play the unlimited-data or multi-country coverage cards. Our page of compared eSIM carriers and providers reviews them all, with hand-checked prices.

What are the alternatives to eSIM at La Poste Mobile?

No eSIM at your carrier does not mean no eSIM at all. Three strategies, depending on your need.

Option 1, the smartest for travellers: keep your La Poste Mobile plan and add a travel eSIM. Almost every eSIM compatible smartphone handles Dual SIM: your physical La Poste Mobile card stays in the tray for calls, texts and bank codes, while a local eSIM provides data abroad, with no surprise roaming fees. With this setup, no cancellation or number porting is needed: five minutes of set-up on Wi-Fi before departure is enough. If you're going to Bali, we compared six providers to find out which eSIM to choose for Indonesia.

Option 2: switch carriers if eSIM is essential day to day, for example because you just bought a phone without a SIM tray. Number portability is free and automatic in France: you get your RIO code by calling 3179, give it to the new carrier, and they handle the cancellation. Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free activate an eSIM the same day.

Option 3: wait for September 2026. If your current phone has a SIM tray and you are not travelling before then, the simplest move is to sit tight: your plan will keep working normally, and the eSIM will arrive with the migration to the Bouygues network, in principle with no action on your side.

The rat's advice: Do not cancel an €11.99 plan just for a two-week trip. A travel eSIM on your phone's second line costs a few euros, gets discarded after use, and your French number stays reachable for the whole stay. Cancelling for that is using a hammer to swat a fly.

Which smartphones are eSIM compatible?

Compatibility depends on the phone, not the carrier. On the Apple side, every iPhone released since late 2018 supports eSIM: iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, then every following generation up to the iPhone 17 line and the iPhone Air, including the SE 2020 and 2022. We keep the full list of eSIM compatible iPhones up to date model by model, with the exceptions by country of purchase.

On the Android side, eSIM has shipped in the Samsung Galaxy since the S20 (S, Z Fold, Z Flip series, some A models), the Google Pixel since the Pixel 3, and the recent ranges from Xiaomi, Motorola, Sony, Honor, Oppo and OnePlus. Watch out for market variants: the same range can exist with and without eSIM depending on the country of sale.

The universal test takes 30 seconds: dial *#06# on the phone keypad. If a 32-digit EID number appears, the device supports eSIM; if there is only the IMEI, it does not. We illustrated this check screenshot by screenshot in our iPhone 8 eSIM compatibility article, whose answer happens to be negative.

Worth noting: a phone bought from La Poste Mobile with a plan is nothing special in this respect. A recent Samsung Galaxy or iPhone bought there is perfectly eSIM capable at the hardware level; it is the carrier's offer that cannot use it yet, not the device.

The rat's advice: Planning to buy the iPhone Air or a future phone without a SIM tray? Check your La Poste Mobile commitment date before pulling the trigger. Until the eSIM launches, that phone simply cannot host your line, however helpful customer service tries to be.

Frequently asked questions

When will eSIM be available at La Poste Mobile?
La Poste Mobile's CEO has announced a launch in September 2026, timed with the arrival of the iPhone Air, sold without a SIM tray. The date remains an announcement rather than a contractual commitment: until the offer appears on the official website, only the physical SIM card is available.
Does the iPhone Air work with La Poste Mobile?
Not for now. The iPhone Air works exclusively with eSIM, and La Poste Mobile only provides physical SIM cards: activating a line from this carrier on it is impossible today. That blocker is precisely what is pushing the carrier to launch eSIM, announced for September 2026.
How much do La Poste Mobile plans cost?
The carrier positions itself on low-price plans, with or without commitment. In our survey of 19 August 2026, the headline offer was 200 GB for €11.99 per month with no commitment, including 30 GB usable in Europe and the French overseas territories. Prices change regularly: check the price guide, terms of use and legal notices on the official website before subscribing.
What do reviews say about La Poste Mobile?
Customer feedback generally praises the low prices, the simple offers and the presence in post offices, appreciated for the human contact. The recurring criticisms concern customer service delays and, now, the lack of eSIM. The migration to the Bouygues Telecom network, with 5G included, should reshuffle the cards on network quality.
Can you keep your number when leaving La Poste Mobile for an eSIM carrier?
Yes, portability is free and automatic. Dial 3179 to get your RIO code, give it to the new carrier when subscribing, and they handle the cancellation for you. Your number switches over within a few working days, straight onto the new carrier's eSIM if your phone is compatible.
Does an eSIM cost more than a physical SIM card?
No, it is often the opposite. French carriers charge the same price for an eSIM as for the physical card, or less since there is nothing to manufacture or post, and converting from the customer area is often free. On the travel eSIM side, prepaid plans start at a few euros depending on the destination and data volume.
